Guido Costa Projects is pleased to present the new solo show by Philip Akkerman in via Mazzini 24 on Thursday 11 April, 2013.
Seven years after his debut in the gallery, the Dutch artist is offering us a new selection of self-portraits using the technique of oil on masonite board. It is these unique but almost identical, unrepeatable portraits of sameness in his virtuoso hand that have made him famous internationally.
The exhibition Black Matter is made up of 25 pieces that explore the subtle variations offered by the colour black. The result is a brilliant reconstruction of the history of painting from its origins to today, probed through different depths and combinations of this colour.
Over the years, Philip Akkerman has repeatedly delivered astonishing results from an obsessive pictorial experiment: more than three thousand paintings, from the same angle, identical in size and technique.
In his work Philip Akkerman celebrates the ritual of painting, tirelessly dedicating himself to portraiture over the past three decades. Having traced this unique path in the history of painting has led the artist to become famous and widely collected; his amazing case history and has also been the subject of penetrating studies, making him ideal company for other equally obsessive artists such as On Kavara, Opalka and MiroslavTichy.
