On 5 February the new exhibition of work by Fabio Paleari opens. The exhibition, The Leu Family, is dedicated to this extraordinary family.
The Leus, born in Lausanne and now resident in Ibiza, rank among the most famous tattoo artists in the world. They have achieved celebrity status by cleverly marrying the extraordinary techniques of oriental tattooing with western aesthetic imagery. Their tattoos are genuine popular masterpieces, which require months to develop and a very long time to produce, especially their most ambitious and elaborate pieces.
Felix Leu, head of the family, his wife and their children have grown to become leaders of their art in this unique family adventure, which at times resembles a family saga and test of human survival and community spirit.
The recent death of Felix Leu has not interrupted this decades-long adventure, which continues thanks to the work of the heirs and those who have become an integral part of the family over the years. The story of the Leus is a unique document that recounts their self-determination on the fringes of social conventions and is a poetic example of an intense communal, transgressive and creative force.
Born in Milan Fabio Paleari has spent much of his life travelling to and from Milan and Ibiza. In the last ten years he has documented the life of the Leus, piecing together a magnificent series of portraits and private records that document the day-to-day life of this family and the world that surrounds them. The photographs on show represent a selection of work from The Leu Family's Iron, recently published by Trolley Books (London), dedicated to the memory of Felix Leu A.K.A. Don Feliz, the inspiration and protagonist of the project.
All the pieces on show are large-format, one-off photographs printed on vinyl.
Together they form one large installation that spreads outside to offer one gigantic photographic panorama.
The exhibition will remain open to the public (see hours above) from February 5 until the end of March.Special thanks to Trolley Books (Venice/London).
